'By Sea, By Land' - The Motto of the Royal Marines Commandos

The Royal Marines have been part of our Navy since 1664 but it was in 1942, during World War Two, that saw the formation of the first Royal Marines Commandos. 5 RM Commandos were amongst the first to land on D Day, and two thirds of all the landing craft involved were crewed by Royal Marines.

After the war the Royal Marines spent much time in action in the Far East, including involvement in the Malayan emergency and in Borneo, and also in Korea, Suez, Aden, and Cyprus. In 1982, the Royal Marines played a major part in recapturing the Falkland Islands from the Argentinians, and in 1991 they participated in the Gulf War,

With the introduction and successful operational deployment of the Landing Platform (Helicopter), HMS Ocean, and the launch of HMS Bulwark and HMS Albion, as successors to the in-service Landing Platform (Dock) the amphibious capability of the Royal Marines is greatly increased, and becomes a key element in the country's capacity to intervene in areas of conflict overseas.

Dressed in their infamous green beret, the Commandos are one of the more formidable units of the British Armed Forces and we have tried to honour them with our brand new Staffy Bull Terrier in a black breed colour and a Limited Edition of only 50 pieces Worldwide.

Formed in 1942, the Army Air Corps is the smallest of the three combat arms in the Army, but its fleet of helicopters makes it one of the most potent. Providing firepower from the skies, it has a unique role to play on the modern battlefield by delivering hard-hitting support to ground forces during the key stages of a battle.

Dressed in their distinctive Cambridge blue beret and flying Eagle insignia, the Army Air Corps have recently been serving in Afghanistan, boosted by the ferocious cababilites of the Westland Apache attack helicopter.

2014 marks 100 years since the start of the First World War and we have created this special edition figurine in commemoration of this significant milestone in world history.

Our Staffy First World War Soldier has been exclusively painted in a Black breed colour and alternative olive drab uniform, with a hand-painted poppy adorning the front of the base. Each figurine will be numbered with a unique year from 1914 to 2014, a limited edition of only 101 figurines.

A donation of £2 from the sale of each figurine will be given to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

'Old Contemptibles'


We used to pass it every morning going into work, so it was just a case of 'when', and not 'if', we would make good on the inspiration taken from the First World War Memorial in Ironbridge.

The memorial is a haunting, yet thought provoking, statue of a British Tommy in his full trench gear, and faithfully recreated here as a Staffordshire Bull Terrier that we have called 'The Old Contemptibles'.

'The Old Contemptibles' comes from the name adopted by the regular army of the British Expeditionary Force of World War I, and believed to have derived from the comments of Kaiser Wilhelm II, when he mocked the British as a 'Contemptible little army'. From that moment on the normal British Tommy was delighted to refer to himself as an 'Old Contemptible', and the surviving veterans, of which there were very few by 1918, still referred to themselves as 'The Old Contemptibles'.
