Old English Sheepdog, Archbishop of Canterbury




Thomas à Becket was a 12th century Archbishop of Canterbury, and is arguably, and unfortunately, more famous for the manner of his death than his life.

In 1170, Becket returns from France, where he has been in exile over a disagreement with King Henry II. The King is believed to have said “Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?", which ultimately seals Becket’s fate. Rightly or wrongly interpreted as a Royal Order, four Knights take it upon themselves to confront Becket and brutally murder him within Canterbury Cathedral.

Our beautifully sculpted and highly accurate portrayal of Becket in his full ecclesiastical robes is a ‘Time Limited Edition’ only available until December 31st.

The famous white helmets of the Brighton and Hove Police were introduced for daytime summer wear in 1933. They were withdrawn in 1939 during the Second World War, but were re-introduced between 1952 and 1968.

At a time of the Mods and Rockers, these Brighton Bobbies would have been a frequent, and welcome, sight on the famous beach and promenade. Unfortunately the white helmets were scrapped when the Brighton and Hove Police was amalgamated with the newly created Sussex Police Force in January 1968, the police chiefs saw no reason why seafront officers should dress differently from other officers in the force. Rumours do persist however that the classic white helmet is to be reintroduced some time in the future!

Reliable, tough and intelligent, the Old English Sheepdog has the character and stature to be a perfect match as a classical British Policeman. Sculpted by Mike Rogers, this 'Brighton Bobby' is a Limited Edition of Only 50 pieces, with each piece being individually numbered with a unique edition number and a signed Certificate of Authenticity!

The Hundred Years War

The Hundred Years War was a series of Plank conflicts waged between the Kingdom of England and the French Royal House of Valois for control of the French Throne.

Waged for 116 years between 1337 and 1453 it was marked by such famous battles as Crecy, Poitiers, Castillon and of course Agincourt.

A war for land and power between the highest Nobility of Europe, fighting cheek by jowl with the lowest of peasants no less noble in fight. None more so than the English Longbow Archer, mere tradesmen from the Shires of England who would strike fear into the bravest French Noblemen.

The Longbow Archer

Trained with a bow since childhood, these archers could pull a hundred and thirty pounds of force, sending scores of arrows to pierce the most expensive armour before a French Crossbowman had chance to load a single shot. Aptly then that we have chosen the Old English Sheepdog, the perfect match for the loyalty, stamina and strength represented by the Longbow Archer.

Our Hundred Years War series, is also represented by our new English Bull Terrier Crossbowman and Bulldog Man-At-Arms, and in the near future we hope to be utilising other breeds, such as the Dogue de Bordeaux and Basset Hound, covering such tantalising topics as a Noble Knight, French Crossbowman and even Edward the Black Prince!

Introducing our new Old English Sheepdog 'Gruagach the Hairy', a Celtic standard bearer, and second figurine in our Harrop Historical 100 series.

From around 750 BC to 12 BC, the Celts were the most powerful people in central and northern Europe. There were many tribes of Celts, speaking a vaguely common language.

The word Celt comes from the Greek word, Keltoi, which means barbarians and is properly pronounced as "Kelt".

The Celtic standard, or carnyx, was also a type of bronze trumpet and was used in warfare, probably to incite troops to battle and intimidate opponents.

A Limited Edition of only 100 figurines, and to mark its provenance, each exclusive piece will be hand numbered on the base with a unique edition number and will come complete with a Certificate of Authenticity!

The Harrop Historical 100’s

Here at the Harrop Sculpting Studio we have been diligently working on the famous and infamous figures from Ancient Briton and these illustrious Isles with all of its defenders and conquerors that have evolved and moulded this fine nation.

We have chosen our breed cast very carefully making sure that each figurine harbours a true sense of irony, bringing each piece to life.

The first in our special Harrop Historical 100 Limited Edition Series is our Bearded Collie as King Caractacus, who stealthily harried the Roman invaders at every turn. He is now joined by 'Gruagach the Hairy' our Old English Sheepdog Celtic Standard Bearer.

Following from this pair of Britons we will be releasing Hengist the Angle, or rather our 'Anglish Bull Terrier', whom along with his brother Horsa, represent the beginnings of English Saxon rule from 449 AD. Next up will be our 'Britonish' Bulldog, who with be in full Battle King Regalia as Vortigern the last powerful Briton before the grip of the Saxons began to close.

The script for this series is incredibly exciting indeed and will cover Romans, Vikings and also the Normans who were huge players in our history. Not forgetting the mighty 'Britonish' Bulldog who with be in full Battle King Regalia as Vortigern the last powerful Briton before the grip of the Saxons began to close its grip.
