The name 'Rangers' was suggested by Moses McNeil after he saw the name in a book about English Rugby. In 1888 one of the most famous and fiercely competed footballing fixtures was born when Rangers met their noisy neighbours Glasgow Celtic for the first 'Old Firm' derby. Two years later Rangers were one of ten original members of the Scottish Football League and were playing in their now famous Ibrox Stadium. All the pieces were now in place for success and Glasgow Rangers have gone on to win 54 League titles, 33 Scottish Cups and a UEFA Cup title in 1972. 'The Hoops' of Glasgow Celtic from 13th May until 15th July. ________________________________________________ Glasgow Celtic, Robert Harrop, Bulldog Gift We now turn our attention to Glasgow, Scotland's largest city and home of two of Britain's footballing giants and fiercest rivals. Joining the 'The Gers', is the current Scottish Premier League Champions Celtic or the 'The Hoops'. Glasgow Celtic was established in 1877 at a meeting in St. Mary's church hall in Calton, Glasgow, by Irish Marist Brother Walfrid. His purpose was to alleviate poverty in the East End of Glasgow by raising money for charity and the name 'Celtic' was intended to reflect the club's Irish and Scottish roots. On 28 May 1888, Celtic played their first official match against Rangers and won 5–2 and one of the most famous and fiercely competed footballing fixtures, the 'Old Firm' derby, was born. In 1889 Celtic reached the final of the Scottish Cup, this was their first season in the competition, but lost 2–1 in the final. Celtic again reached the final of the Scottish Cup in 1892, but this time were victorious after defeating Queen's Park 5–2 in the final. Several months later the club moved to its new ground, Celtic Park, and in the following season won the Scottish League Championship for the first ever time. Celtic's crowning glory started in 1966 when Jock Stein guided the Hoops to nine straight Scottish League wins, culminating in 1967 when they won every competition they entered: the Scottish League, the Scottish Cup, the Scottish League Cup, the Glasgow Cup, and the European Cup. Celtic thus became the first British team, and the first from outside Spain, Portugal and Italy, to win the competition. Their success has never waivered and they have just picked up their 44th Scottish League Championship in the 2012 / 13 season. A Strict Time Limited Edition, orders must be placed before 15th July, 2013*. A Hand painted ceramic resin dog figurine / statue from the Doggie People Collection. A group of Italian and Swiss members were unhappy with the domination of Italians in the team and broke away leading to the creation of Internazionale, the name deriving from the wish of these founding members to accept foreign players as well as Italians. The club won its very first Scudetto (championship) in 1910 and have spent their entire history in the top flight of Italian football, known as Serie A, since 1929–1930. Since then, Inter have won 30 domestic trophies, including the league 18 times, the Coppa Italia seven times and the Supercoppa Italiana five times. From 2006 to 2010, the club won five successive league titles, equalling the all-time record. They have won the Champions League three times; two back-to-back in 1964 and 1965 and then another in 2010; the second most of any Italian club after their local rivals A.C. Milan. Inter's home games are played at the San Siro, also known as the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, the stadium it shares with its largest rivals A.C. Milan. The matches between the two teams are called Derby della Madonnina, which is one of the most anticipated derbies in football. The Wednesday football club had moved from Bramall Lane to their own ground at Olive Grove, and the tenants of Bramall Lane needed to create a new team to generate income as well as to keep the cricket players fit during the winter months. Named after their parent cricket club, they were nicknamed ‘The Blades’ due to Sheffield's worldwide reputation for steel and cutlery production. The clubs crest contains two crossed swords, or 'Blades', under the White Rose of Yorkshire, and although they originally played in white shirts and blue shorts, they have been playing in their recognisable red and white stripes for most of their history. The club has won the League once, runners-up twice and won the FA Cup four times, runners up twice and beaten semi-finalists five times. As a cricket club they adopted the ‘North End’ suffix simply because they moved to the North End of the town. In 1875 they took a lease on a field at Deepdale, a field which was to become their permanent home. Playing cricket and other games such as lacrosse and rounders were not financially viable, so in 1877 members turned to rugby union. Unfortunately, this venture too was a failure since the club could not compete with the Preston Grasshoppers, who were already a well-established force. However, on the 5th October 1878 North End played its first game under association rules and the football club was born. The club was a founding member of the Football League in 1888 and completed the inaugural season unbeaten to become the first league champions, in the same season winning the FA Cup without conceding a goal to become the first club to achieve the English football ‘Double’. The club colours have always been blue and white, and after having played in either blue and white hooped or striped shirts, Preston starting sporting the famous white shirts and navy blue shorts which eventually earned them the nickname ‘The Lilywhites’. The Lilywhites have won the League twice, runners-up six times and won the FA Cup twice, runners-up five times. A Strict Time Limited Edition, orders must be placed before 14th July, 2014*. In September 1867, the club established a football team to keep the club together and fit during the winter months. It soon became apparent that football would soon eclipse the cricketing side of the club and the 1880's saw two major events that would radically change its fate. In 1882 the cricket and football clubs parted company, with the cricket club ceasing to exist by 1925. The football club however would go on from strength to strength and would turn professional in 1887, making it one of the oldest professional clubs in the world and the third oldest in the English league. The Wednesday, as they were known until 1929, were founding members of The Football Alliance in 1889 and joined The Football League three years later. Since 1899, Sheffield Wednesday have played their home matches at Hillsborough Stadium in the north-western suburb of Owlerton, hence their nickname The Owls. They have won four League titles, three FA Cups and one League Cup in 1991 and were also one of the founding members of the Premier League in 1992. The Clarets of Burnley from 1st August until 15th September. ________________________________________________ The Seasiders, Football, Robert Harrop, Bulldog, Figurine, Gift The Seasiders can trace their origins back to Victoria F.C., a church club founded in 1877, with a ground in Caunce Street, Blackpool. This team disbanded a few years later, but some of its members are understood to have merged with old boys from St John's School to form a new club called Blackpool St John's. But the two factions remained disunited and, in July 1887, at a meeting in the Stanley Arms public house, the members resolved to wind up St John's and form a new club to represent the whole town called Blackpool Football Club. At the conclusion of the 1888–89 season, The Seasiders became founder members of the Lancashire League and on 13 May 1896 the club became a limited company and applied for entry to the Football League. During the 1898–99 season, the club amalgamated with local rivals South Shore and moved to Bloomfield Road, which has remained their home ground to this day. Blackpool's most notable achievement is winning the 1953 FA Cup Final, with three further FA Cup Final appearances during the 1950's. They also reached the top tier of English football, the Premier League, at the end of the 2009–10 campaign. A Strict Time Limited Edition, orders must be placed before 11th August, 2014*. The Football League saw the invitation as a chance to promote association football in the Rugby League-dominated county of the West Riding of Yorkshire. It duly elected the new club into Division Two of the league, in place of Doncaster Rovers. Four days later, at the 23rd annual meeting of Manningham FC, the committee decided to change code from Rugby League to Association Football. As a result the Bradford City Association Football Club was formed without having played a game, taking over Manningham's colours of claret and amber, and their Valley Parade ground in which they still reside. Promotion to the top tier soon followed in 1908 and the club won the FA Cup in 1911. In the 2012–13 season, they became the first ever team from the fourth tier of English football to reach a major domestic Wembley cup final, the Football League Cup. In the same season, they returned to Wembley for the playoff final and won promotion to League One with a 3–0 win over Northampton Town. Playing in various blue and white kits for their first few years, the club played their first competitive game in October 1882 and in 1883 the club moved to Turf Moor where they still play to this day. Burnley were one of the 12 founders the Football League for the 1888–89 season and by 1910 they were playing in the claret and sky blue kit colour where their nickname of the Clarets originates. The Clarets have been Football League Champions twice, in 1920–21 and 1959–60 and have won the FA Cup once, in 1914. The Clarets also reached the 1961 quarter-finals of the European Cup and they are one of only three teams to have won all top four professional divisions of English football. In 2009 Burnley were promoted to the Premier League, but were relegated back to the Championship in their first season only to be promoted again in 2014.
