Similar in style, but made before Stingray and Thunderbirds; Fireball XL5 was set in 2067 and follows the missions of the spaceship Fireball XL5, manned by Colonel Steve Zodiac and his crew of the World Space Patrol. Fireball XL5 Produced in 1962, 39 episodes were made in total using Gerry Anderson’s now iconic Supermarionation film techniques. It is the year 2062 and the World Space Patrol (WSP) has assigned the spaceship Fireball XL5 to patrol Sector 25 of charted interstellar space, to explore the region and help to protect the Earth from alien invasion. The World Space Patrol is based at Space City, located on an island in the South Pacific, headed by Commander Zero with the assistance of Lieutenant Ninety. Part of a fleet of Space craft, Fireball XL5, is commanded by Colonel Steve Zodiac with a crew of three, including Doctor Venus, Professor Matthew 'Matt' Matic and co-pilot Robert the Robot. Doctor Venus is a Doctor of Space Medicine and medical officer on board Fireball XL5. She is of French origin and was personally chosen to be part of his crew by Steve Zodiac. A brave woman, Doctor Venus is not only very professional, but she can be quite assertive when the situation calls for it.
