A World Superpower not necessarily famous for its World domination in football, they have however qualified for 10 World Cup Finals and have the distinction of being responsible for one of the greatest World Cup upsets of all time. In the 1950 World Cup Finals in Brazil, the part-time squad of the USA had been drawn in the same group as heavy favourites England. This was England's first participation in a World Cup and the game against the USA was considered a push-over. The game however finished 1-0 in the USA's favour, and in a World lacking in the communication advantages of today, plus the perceived gulf between the two teams, the British press initially thought that England had won 10-1!
